DEATH
A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WE LOST IN 2016
by Glenda Higgins

Let's cancel death
Your father's a doctor
He can do it
Treat it like a fracture

You can x-ray
And understand
And cast away
Like used coffee cups

Let's cancel death
Put it on hold even
Cruel harvester of our dreams
Faith overrun in fields

Of our fertile minds
When we pray for life
Never having experienced
The humor of the final moment

When we all become groundhogs
In our resting places
Under stones in fields
Or blowing in the wind

Eternally. Let's cancel it
Tell your dad, ok?
Maybe with a plan
Or even a World's Fair

A gathering of earth's minds
We can do it
Potters could pot
Weavers could weave

And runners could outrun it
Let's cancel death
And try something else
You go first and I'll watch
